SSP Financial Process
As part of their training initiative, Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) requested a series of illustrations depicting financial processes occuring in their ERP system. I sought to enliven the subject matter by creating memorable visual metaphors within the context of the organization. SSP is responsible for Naval nuclear armament, so I featured the Trident missile and Ohio Class submarine using a somewhat lighthearted visual style.
These business process graphics were created for Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) as an introduction to the Navy logistics and finance system, Navy ERP. The images started their lives as Visio workflows (the bane of everything aesthetic and good in the world) and I translated them into illustrations tailored to the organization's mission and culture. I interpreted the steps using visual metaphors, some admittedly on the nose, and others that were fairly unique. It was a joy to see how well some of them were received (the piggy bank was everyone's favorite, in spite of its tragic end).
With 20 individual graphics to draw, I started many with marker sketches, having just bought a set of french grey Prismacolors that I was eager to try out. I won't fool you into thinking every sketch turned out as close to the final product as this one, or nearly as coherent. With this one, though, I was on a roll.
The Budget to Authorize graphic details how funds are approved through Congress, passed on to the Pentagon, and divvied up, and used to purchase lovely new SLBMs. Where nuclear weapons are concerned, a dose of humor is advisable.
